Irradiation of benzene with /sup 14/CH/sup +/ and /sup 14/CH/sub 3//sup +/ ions

Solid benzene at -196/sup 0/C was irradiated with /sup 14/CH/sup +/ and /sup 14/CH/sub 3//sup +/ ions in 10-eV kinetic energy. Yields were determined for the labeled hydrocarbon products: benzene, toluene, cycloheptatriene, diphenylmethane, biphenyl, and phenylcycloheptatriene. The radioactivity distributions between the ring and the methyl group of the toluene product were also determined. These results have been compared to those previously obtained with /sup 14/C/sup +/ and /sup 14/CH/sub 2//sup +/ ions. The comparisons have provided both insight into the reaction mechanisms and a tentative estimate of the distribution of the species (/sup 14/CH/sub x/) that react with the benzene.
