SMUD and EVs: A plan to become the nation's clean air capital
By the year 2005, Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) intends to make Sacramento, California the clean air capital of the nation''. To achieve this goal, SMUD is actively promoting the widespread use of electricity as a replacement for petroleum in all forms of transportation while generating electricity with a minimum impact on air quality. Specifically, this entails the promotion of electric vehicle (EV) development and commercialization within the Sacramento area. SMUD's plans also call for expanding Sacramento's Regional Transit (RT) electric transit systems and construction of a high speed inter-city electric rail service from the Sacramento area. SMUD's electric vehicle program is a multifaceted program which includes utilizing EVs in SMUD service fleets, developing in EV loan program, establishing EV charging stations, participating in CALSTART and the California Electric Transportation Coalition, and establishing the Electric Vehicle Pioneer program.
