Enhancement of the magnetic properties of Sm-Fe and Nd-Fe-N alloys with ThMn[sub 12] structure by utilizing HDDR phenomena. [Hydrogenation decomposition desorption recombination]

The effects of HDDR (hydrogenation decomposition desorption recombination) phenomena on the magnetic properties of SmFe[sub 11]Ti, SmFe[sub 10]MM[prime], NdFe[sub 11]Ti, and Nd[sub 1 + [delta]]Fe[sub 10]MM[prime] ([delta] = 0, 0.3, M = Ti, V, Mo, M[prime] = V, Mo) compounds with a ThMn[sub 12]-type structure were investigated. Alloy powders of SmFe[sub 10]V[sub 2], SmFe[sub 10]TiV, and NdFe[sub 10]TiV, and NdFe[sub 10]MM[prime] (M = Ti, V, Mo, M[prime] = V, Mo) form a ThMn[sub 12]-type structure after heat treatment at 800 C in hydrogen and subsequently in vacuum, but RFe[sub 11]Ti (R = Sm, Nd) compounds form a TbCu[sub 7]-type structure. High coercivities of 6.0 kOe and 5.8 kOe were obtained using SmFe[sub 10]TiV and Nd[sub 1.3]Fe[sub 10]VMoN[sub x] compounds respectively after HDDR processing.
