Interest in reducing the labor-intensive requirements for calibrating high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors has resulted in various efficiency models. This study examines a method for predicting the efficiencies over ranges of sample geometries, whereby only a few measurements are required. The method has been appraised against extensive HPGe calibrations and has been used for a nondestructive calibration for samples from a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) satellite. The method is explained using concepts illustrated in the paper for a gamma energy is shown as a contour map.
