Spectral dependence of damage resistance of refractory oxide optical coatings

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7267412
The laser damage thresholds of three refractory oxide material coatings (TiO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/ and HfO/sub 2/) and SiO/sub 2/ were measured at three wavelengths (355, 532, and 1064 nm). For each wavelength, quarter-wave thick films were deposited on fused silica substrates by three manufacturers using electron-gun evaporation. Samples were irradiated with the primary, doubled and tripled frequency of a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser with pulse duration 20 to 30 ps. An increase of the threshold electric field from 1064 to 532 nm was measured, which was consistent with that predicted for electron-avalanche breakdown. Reduced thresholds at 355 nm indicated dominance of two-photon absorption.
