A gas chromatographic method is described for the measurement of the concentrations of individual C/sub 1/ through C/sub 5/ hydrocarbons in the atmosphere as low as 0.01 ppM by volume. The rapid method intended for routine sampling and analysis provides for collection of grab samples and integrated samples. The chromatographic analysis is performed on a single, packed column operated isothermally at 0/sup 0/C. The elution of 17 hydrocarbons is accomplished within 16 min. Flame ionization is used for the detection with pure oxygen supplied to the hydrogen flame to enhance its sensitivity. The lower limit of the measurement of the C/sub 3/ through C/sub 5/ hydrocarbons can be extended to 0.1 ppB by concentrating 100 ml of gas in a freeze trap. The precision of results of replicate analyses of an air sample should be 10 percent. (BLM)
