A study is made of the influence of heat exchange between electrons and ions and the finite longitudinal electron thermal conductivity on the drift instability of a weakly collisional finite-..beta.. plasma. Drift waves whose phase velocities along the magnetic field are of the order of the ion thermal velocity are considered. The limits of the drift-instability regions and the wave growth rates are found. The dissipative effects studied here expand the unstable regions. In the stable regions these effects are stabilizing.
