Coprecipitation of actinides with magnesium hydroxide. [U, Th, Pa, Np, Pu, and Am]

A study was made of the coprecipitation of small (U and Th) and tracer (Pa, Np, Pu, and Am) amounts of actinides with magnesium hydroxide in relation to the pH and composition of the solutions. The distribution of the actinides between the solution and precipitate was monitored photometrically and radiometrically. The optimal conditions for coprecipitation of each element were determined. It was established that the precipitation of all actinides begins with the appearance of a magnesium hydroxide precipitate in solution and is caused by the tendency of each of these elements to hydrolyze and form complexes in the solutions studied.
