Influence of finite-. beta. effects on the lower-hybrid-drift instability in post-implosion theta pinches

The influence of finite plasma ..beta.. on the lower-hybrid-drift instability is examined including the effects of (a) transverse electromagnetic perturbations (deltaBnot-equal0) and (b) resonant and nonresonant delB/sub 0/ electron-orbit modifications. For typical post-implosion theta-pinch parameters, it is found that there is a critical value of local ..beta.. (..beta../sub c/r) such that the instability is completely stabilized (..gamma..<0) for ..beta..>..beta../sub cr/. For example, ..beta../sub cr/=1.6, when T/sub e//T/sub i/=1, ..omega../sub p//sub e//sup 2//..omega../sub c//sub e//sup 2/very-much-greater-than1, and vertical-barr/sub i/partiallnn/partialxvertical-bar=2.
