In a study of the rf instability in the frequency range 0.5--10 GHz in a plasma accelerator with an external magnetic field, the conditions correpsonding to instability and to microwave generation at a level above the thermal level are determined from the intensity of the electromagnetic component of the rf field. Intense microwave generation occurs under extreme operating conditions of the plasma accelerator. The microwave intensity is 2--3 orders of magnitude above the thermal level. Microwave generation is accompanied by an increase in the ion velocity in the plasma stream while the other discharge parameters remain constant. (AIP)
