With only a ''simple metal can,'' muffler engineers do a remarkable job of silencing the internal combustion engine. Their design and development efforts are an interesting blend of the theoretical and the empirical. A discussion is given of: (1) automobile acoustics; (2) muffler theory; (3) current design and development; (4) noise legislation; and (5) muffler fabrication.
