Acoustical parametric studies of a muffler system

Conference · · Proc. - Int. Conf. Noise Control Eng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6126409
Studies of mufflers has been a topic of both research and design interest for many years. The design of a muffler system should meet many criteria such as acoustical, aerodynamic, mechanical and economical. The acoustical criterion is perhaps the most important one for environmental noise regulations. Among the various acoustical descriptors of a muffler system performance, insertion loss and radiated sound pressure level are the most useful. These two descriptors need acoustical characterization of the source. The parameters which govern the acoustical performance studies of a (reactive) muffler are discussed.
