The development of lanthanide and actinide separations by ion exchange from 1947 to the present is reviewed. The technique of pressurized ion exchange developed during the 1960's is discussed. Lanthanide and actinide separations by elution development generally using ..cap alpha..-hydroxyisobutyrate eluent and either Dowex 50W-X8 or Dowex 50W-X12 resin are described. The separation of larger (multigram) quantities of rare earths and actinides by displacement development using conventional ion exchange systems is described. Sample elution curves, equipment diagrams, and equipment photographs are included. 53 references. (BLM)
