CATION-EXCHANGE STUDIES OF LEAD$sup 11$ ON DOWEX 50W-X8. SEPARATION FROM MIXTURES
Quantitative studies are reported on the behavior of Pb/sup 2+/ at milligram levels, using cation-exchange resin Dowex 50W-X8. Various eluents, such as nitric acid, ammonium acetate, sodium nitrate, tartaric acid, citric acid, ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (disodium salt), and perchloric acid, are used for column operation. Two hundred ml of 2M nitric acid or ammonium acetate is sufficient for quantitative elution of lead from 1.4 x 14.5 cm of Dowex 50W-X8 resin. The efficiency of the various eluents is evalunted in terms of their elution constants. Pb/sup 2+/ is separated from barium, strontium, and aluminum by selective elution with ammoniuun acetate (lM) and from Ce/sup 4+/, Zr/sup 4+/, Th/sup 4+/, Bi/sup / 3>s+, and Fe/sup 3+/, by converting the latter into suitable anionic complexes.
