The Facet Enterprises, Inc. plant is located on a 31-acre site in the town of Elmira Heights, Chemung County, N.Y. Significant levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected in on-site monitoring wells including trichloroethene (TCE), trans-1,2-dichloroethene, vinyl chloride, and 1,1,1-trichloroethane. TCE has been detected in the ground water approximately 1,500 feet southeast of the plant site. The Facet site presents a potential public health concern to on-site workers and the surrounding community, particularly with respect to the existing contamination of the public drinking water supply.
