Novel polybenzamide compounds useful for in vitro or in vivo chelation are described. The compounds have the formula given in patent. Polyamines are reacted with 2,3-dimethoxy benzoyl chloride unsubstituted or substituted with SO[sub 3]H, SO[sub 3]M, NO[sub 2], CO[sub 2]H or CO[sub 2]M as desired is reacted with a polyamine in an inert solvent then demethylated with BBr[sub 3] or BCl[sub 3] in an inert solvent. Where compounds symmetrically substituted on the terminal N's are desired, the polyamine is first reductively alkylated by reaction with an aldehyde or ketone and the resulting Schiff base is hydrogenated.
