Exhaust gas recirculation valve
An improved exhaust gas recirculation valve for automotive emission control systems employing exhaust gas recirculation is described, with particular reference to its dual diaphragm nature which permits response to both the pressure signal created at an induction passage slot traversed by the edge of the throttle and to the manifold pressure. The two diaphragms are of different effective mass defining a manifold pressure chamber therebetween. Upon an increase in manifold pressure, the valve opening force is increased by a force proportional to the increase in manifold pressure. The greater flow area through the valve thereby provided compensates for the reduced pressure differential in the recirculation passage and the reduced residual fraction in the combustion chamber to provide the desired dilution of the air-fuel mixture.
