Two catalysts having the forms of tin-oxide-coated metal surfaces and platinum, palladium, and rhodium supported on cordierite (2MgO{center dot}2Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}{center dot}5SiO{sub 2}) have been introduced for the first time in a cw transversely excited (TE) CO{sub 2} laser to perform a long-term sealed-off operation. Temporal variations of gas compositions and discharge conditions with and without these catalysts are analyzed. Sealed-off operation with an output level at 550 W for more than 110 h of discharge time was achieved.
