Glass-ceramic matrices of the composition 5SiO{sub 2} x 2Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} x 2MgO x (xTiO{sub 2}) (x= 7 and 15 wt %) were made by a sol-gel process to obtain highly homogeneous cordierite/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} and cordierite/ZrO{sub 2} composites. The volume fractions of the reinforcing phases ranged from 0 to 0.6, and sintering was achieved by hot-pressing at temperatures between 900{degrees}C and 1000{degrees}C. The mechanical behavior and thermal properties of these composites were studied as functions of the volume fraction of the inclusions and the sintering temperature. The fracture mechanism will be discussed from observed changes on Young`s modulus and toughness evaluated through three-point bending tests and indentation techniques.
