Reactions of anionic zirconocene [eta][sup 2]-aldehyde complexes with metal carbonyls lead to rapid and quantitative formation of heterobimetallic complexes containing a new carbon-carbon bond, thereby suggesting a modified mechanism for homogeneously catalyzed carbon monoxide hydrogenation. Nine new bimetallic complexes are reported, including the X-ray structure of ([eta][sup 5]-C[sub 5]H[sub 4]Me)[sub 2]Zr(Me)[OCH(C[sub 6]H[sub 4]Me)C(O)Fe (CO)[sub 4]]Li-(THF)[sub 2]. 13 refs., 1 fig.
