The mechanisms of the change of structure and properties of glasses based on the PbO-CuO-SiO/sub 2//sup -/B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ system as a function of their composition and conditions of thermal processing are investigated. Ranges of compositions of the glasses and their properties are shown in a table by the example of one of the compositions of each region. It is seen from IR spectra that the thermal processing of the glasses from the 2nd group leads to an improvement of resolution of the band 1150-1000 cm/sup -1/ and an increase of intensity of the band 550-400 cm/sup -1/. In the glasses of the 1st group, diborates are present and also boroxol, and possibly tetraborate groupings, which results from a comparison of the IR spectrum in the figure with the spectra of crystalline Li/sub 2/O X 2B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Na/sub 2/O X 4B/sub 2/O/sub 3/ (the structure of the latter is formed by tetraborate groupings) and vitreous B/sub 2/O/sub 3/, in which the majority of the BO/sub 3/ groups are combined in boroxol groupings. In the glasses of the third group, the BO/sub 3/ polyhedra are isolated from one another. Thus, the investigation has shown that whereas some properties are determined mainly by the structure of the boron-oxygen component, others depend significantly on other factors. The mechanisms established can be used for the development of new compositions of glasses with a specified set of properties.
