OCRWM plans to provide training assistance to states, local, and tribal governments
To support the transportation of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste to a disposal or storage facility, Sec. 180(c) of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, as amended, states that the US Department of Energy (DOE) shall provide technical assistance and funds to States for training for public safety officials of appropriate units of local government and Indian Tribes through whose jurisdiction the Secretary of Energy plans to transport spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive waste. Training shall cover procedures required for safe routine transportation of these materials, as well as procedures for dealing with emergency response situation. To fulfill its mandate, the DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) has engaged in an interactive process with interested parties to develop a strategy to implement the requirements of Sec. 180(c) for training public officials in corridor jurisdictions for both safe routine transportation and accidents requiring emergency response. The proposed strategy is a five-step process toward the implementation of the Sec. 180(c) requirements.
