Revised data show uncollectibles still high

New data were used to make corrections of a previously published article on the uncollectible experiences of electric utilities during the 1970-1975 period. Original data had included some nonelectric dollars, which required new calculations that are 5.5 percent lower than those reported, for a total of $170 million. There was a 40-50 percent increase in written-off uncollectibles between 1974 and 1975, a period when the percent of sales for electric utilities rose only 20-25 percent. High prices following the 1974 Arab oil embargo are blamed for the increase in uncollectibles. Con Edison represents 30 percent of the total uncollectibles. Poor records are related to urban areas, combination utilities, and utility size. The revised data experienced changes in percentages but no change in relationships. (DCK)
