Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6273754

This report presents selected summaries and percent changes of energy consumption by State, by principal energy source, and by major end-use sector. In this report, the major end-use sectors are residential, commercial, industrial, transportation and electric utility sectors. From 1960 to 1981, the amount of energy consumed in the United States grew each year except for two periods. First, consumption decreased in 1974 and 1975 following the Arab oil embargo; second, consumption fell each year after 1979, when a record amount of energy was consumed. In 1981, U.S. energy consumption totaled 74.0 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), down 2.6 percent from 1980 and down 6.2 percent from the 1979 record of 78.9 quadrillion Btu.
