Complex impedance of electrochemical cells based on yttria doped thoria

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)
In the frequency range 10/sup -2/ to 5.10/sup 5/ Hz and the temperature interval 400 to 1200/sup 0/C, the impedance diagram of a symmetrical cell based on yttria-doped thoria is composed of three semicircles. The influence of the geometrical factor of the thoria samples indicates that the two low-frequency semicircles characterize interface processes. The electrical resistance of the electrolyte is determined by the low frequency intercept of the high frequency semicircle with the real axis. The electronic conductivity of thoria based solid solutions deduced from the variation of this point obeys the law sigma/sub +/ = kP/sub O/sub 2//1/4. Ionic conductivity measured as a function of the oxide vacancy concentration and the relevant activation energies are also reported. An aging process was observed on this material. 7 figures.
