Electrophoretic Deposition from a Calcium Hydroxide Dispersion

The authors studied electrophoretic deposition from a calcium hydroxide suspension to obtain separators with a designated weight, thickness, and porosity. Methyl ethyl ketone was the dispersing medium. Stabilizing and binding were acheived by methyl ethyl ketone solutions of a styrene copolymer with maleic anhydride (Styromal) and nitriloacrylic acid (SN-20). The electrophoretic deposition was carried out in a bath with parallel nickel electrodes. A figure shows the data on electrophoretic deposition from a calcium hydroxide dispersion. The coating density is not constant as previuosly thought, but varies with voltage at the bath electrodes and deposition time. The data indicate that separator coatings with designated properties can be produced directly on battery electrodes by varying the electrochemical deposition parameters.
