Quadrupole moment of the first 3- state in /sup 208/ Pb

The B (E3; 0/sup +/ ..-->.. 3/sup -/) and quadrupole moment, Q/sub 3//sub -/, of the first excited state of /sup 208/Pb have been measured by the reorientation effect in Coulomb excitation, giving B (E3; 0/sup +/ ..-->.. 3/sup -/) = 0.665 +- 0.035 e/sup 2/b/sup 3/ and Q/sub 3//sub -/ = -0.42 +- 0.32 e b. This value for Q/sub 3//sub -/ is much smaller in magnitude than those obtained by Barnett et al., and is consistent with most theoretical predictions.
