Various kinds of summary information were given about the plants above. At peak production, Leuna processed 120,000 tons per year of brown coal tar, 40,000 to 50,000 tons per year of bituminous coal middle oils, and 1,200,000 tons per year of dried brown coal, producing 600,000 tons per year of liquid products (40 percent aviation base gasoline, 20 percent motor gasoline, 40 percent diesel oil). During the war, coal throughput was almost doubled, not by major changes in procedure, but by greater attention to detail, such as adoption of automatic control and use of a falling temperature gradient in the converter system. Much data had been collected from Leuna, including the fact that it was producing aviation base gasoline at RM200 per ton and selling it at RM340 per ton. Leuna had taken over much of the research activity earlier based in Ludwigshafen. Luetzkendorf had many unusual features, but it had not been operated long enough or well enough to give much information. It operated on petroleum refining residues and bituminous coal tar. Zeitz was investigated mainly for its low-temperature hydrogenation (T.T.H.) process, for the production of diesel oil, lubricating oil, and refined wax. Blechhammer was intended to operate on middle oils from coal tar and on bituminous coal, but conditions forced it to work mainly on brown coal tar. It was found that 700 atm pressure was excessive for brown coal tar because it led to too much precipitation, so work was done at 400 atm. Bruex operated mainly on brown coal heavy oils at 325 atm. It reached a peak rate of 600,000 tons per year production, but only for a short time. A major problem there was arsenic in the coal, which fouled interchangers and catalysts. Poelitz produced at peak rate about 450,000 tons per year of gasoline. The first effective DHD and alkylation stalls to operate were located there. Plants at Boehlen, Strassfurt, Heiderbrech, Moosbierbaum, and Ludwigshafen/Oppau were also visited and reported upon.
