Quasiparticle-injection-induced superconducting weak links

The production of localized weak regions in superconducting materials is discussed. A new type of weak link, produced when a quasiparticle beam is used to drive the superconductor out of equilibrium, is described. The properties of these links, including i-v characteristics and their dependence on tunnel injection current, and the dependence of the weak link critical current on the gap, and on the quasiparticle injection rate, are measured. A model which accounts for these properties is presented.
