Superconducting weak links are studied in which the weak region is created by locally driving the superconductor out of equilibrium using an independent source of quasiparticles. The characteristics of these weak links can be varied electrically or optically at any temperature below T/sub c/. The Josephson coupling is enhanced by varying microbridge material and injection geometry. A simple model which describes the dependence of weak-link critical current, spatial quasiparticle distribution, and energy gap suppression on quasiparticle-injection rate is presented.
