Radiation therapy

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7216545
Guidelines are presented for the development of radiation therapy capability in northwestern Pennsylvania. A surplus of megavoltage (cobalt therapy, linear accelerator) capability exists in the area, (as of 1976) therefore recommendations are made for one clinical radiation therapy center and three or four radiation therapy facilities in the region. Recommendations for patient volume, equipment capability and personnel also are made. A formula is used to determine the number of clinical therapy centers and radiation therapy facilities that should be available. It is suggested that the guidelines be used by the regional Comprehensive Health Planning Council to plan for a more efficient system of radiation therapy capability in the future, and to review 1122 projects from facilities that have, or propose to have, such a capability. Definitions are provided of: radiotherapy, palliative therapy, radiation modality (externally or internally applied), and various professions and staff personnel associated with the facility. Trends in the field of radiation therapy are examined, and problems outlined. Supporting data are provided in tabular and map format. (GRA)
