Radiation therapy

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7210866
Qualitative and quantitative guidelines for radiation therapy are provided by the Comprehensive Health Planning Association of Western Pennsylvania. Radiation therapy refers to the use of ionizing radiation in the treatment of the cancer patient. Three levels of capability exist within the radiation therapy system: radiation therapy centers, usually a component of a major hospital; radiation therapy facilities, existing in specialized or relatively large general hospitals; and radiation therapy units which coordinate activities with larger centers. Guidelines for staffing and equipment are offered for each of these types of facilities, and general planning considerations, gynecology radiation therapy services, professional education, and radiological physics are discussed. A mathematical model is suggested for determination of the number of radiation therapy patients and of the radiation therapy structure. The model is based on information about the total population, morbidity rate, new cancer patients annually, radiation therapy patients annually, and the relationship of radiation therapist to type of structure. A bibliography is appended and the comprehensive health planning process is outlined.
