Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7216518
The experience and research of a team of environmental practitioners at the University of Minnesota are documented in this book which is concerned with developing solutions to environmental health and safety problems in the institutional setting. The book is designed for medical staff, nurses, dietitians, engineers, laboratory personnel, as well as hospital and nursing home administrators. Historic and administrative aspects of environmental health and safety are addressed, and environmental microbiology, sterilization, disinfection, and cleaning techniques are discussed. The section concerning environmental hygiene and radiologic health includes discussions of ventilation and air conditioning, toxic agents, noise production and control, and radiation protection. Patient and personnel safety are considered, as are laboratory and fire safety. The unit devoted to general sanitation contains information on food hygiene, handling and disposal of solid wastes, and collection and disposal of liquid wastes. The treatment and distribution of the water supply is examined, and the treatment, storage, and distribution of special water supplies (those requiring further treatment for purity) are considered. Miscellaneous considerations include insect and rodent control, laundries, and emergency and disaster planning. A glossary is provided and the text is illustrated with photographs, graphs, and drawings. (GRA)
