High-spin states in even Hg isotopes populated in (..cap alpha..,xn) reactions were investigated by in-beam ..gamma..-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. Several new excited states in the ground state band of /sup 198/Hg and in the negative parity bands of /sub 198,200Hg/ were identified. Half-lives of a number of levels in /sup 194,196,198Hg/ were measured. In particular we obtain T/sub 1///sub 2/ = 1.38(4) and 1.85(16) ns for the 12/sup +/ and 10/sup +/ states in /sup 198/Hg, respectively. Intrinsic quadrupole moments Q/sub 0/ derived from these data and the B (E2,0/sup +/ ..-->.. 2/sup +/) agree within the limits of error. These data together with the excitation energies of the ground state band are interpreted within the rotation-alignment model.
