Recovery of low-gravity viscous hydrocarbons

An aqueous solution containing a solubilizing agent (quinoline) and an alkaline agent (sodium hydroxide) was developed for recovery of low-gravity (less than 25/sup 0/ API), viscous crude oils. The base increases the wetting characteristics of the reservoir to the solution. The formation of an oil-in-water emulsion is enhanced by the quinoline. Silica sand packs were saturated with high asphaltene crudes. Treatment with the aqueous solution recovered about 80 percent OOIP.
