An aqueous slug was developed for enhanced oil recovery which contained a substituted nitrobenzene (o-nitroanisole) to emulsify the crude oil, a base (sodium hydroxide) to improve wettability of the reservoir and stability of the oil-in-water emulsion, and optionally a nonionic emulsifying agent (a hydroxyethylated, alkyl aryl phenol: Surfonic N-95) and isopropyl alcohol to increase the solubility of the substituted nitrobenzene. A glass bead pack containing a heavy crude (11/sup 0/ API) was treated with the aqueous slug to produce 49.6 percent OIP.
