A synergistic effect on the viscosity of an aqueous polymer solution for enhanced oil recovery is obtained by adding two polymers to the solution. These polymers are sulfonated poly (2,6-dialkyl phenol) or its water-soluble salts, and poly-(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and/or poly-(N-vinyl-5-R-2-oxazolidinone) where R is a hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl group. The alkyl groups in the first polymer are either methyl, ethyl, or normal propyl.
