CEI improves EHV transformer protection via relay blocking scheme

As the 345-kV system was expanded at Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., the protection scheme used with transformers 200 MVA and larger was reevaluated. CEI has been using a Westinghouse Sudden Pressure Relay (SPR) since 1952 for protection on three-phase, gas-cushioned units rated 6.25 MVA and above, including large EHV transformers. This is the only type of fault pressure relay used at CEI. The SPR relay responds to the sudden increase in gas pressure in the gas cushion of a transformer caused by an internal transformer fault. The relay is sensitive enough to respond to turn-to-turn faults.
