U.S. energy use in 1972 was 74 quadrillion BTU. (BTU x 10/sup 15/). Taking into consideration conservation measures are projected growth, it is estimated that energy demand for the year 2000 would be 180 quadrillion Btu. This is equivalent to a growth rate of 3.23% compound from 1972, and a projected energy demand in 1985 of 112 quadrillion Btu. The roles of various energy sources, including oil, natural gas, nuclear, coal, hydroelectric power, etc. are projected for the years 1985 and 2000. The necessity of developing all available energy sources including coal and nuclear is emphasized. (JGB)
