Properties and reactions exhibited by anthracite lithotypes under thermal stress

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7209404
Petrographically distinct particles of anthracite 6 x 10 and 10 x 14 mesh in size have been visually observed in the 20/sup 0/C to 980/sup 0/C temperature range. The investigation was conducted utilizing a Leitz 0 to 1000/sup 0/C heating stage mounted on a Panphot microscope. Four microlithotypes have been identified for this study: vitrain, clarain, durain, and fusain. Preheat treatment of anthracite particles reduces visible decrepitation. Only durain shows a tendency toward increased decrepitation with increase in particle size. The studies indicate a resistance to thermal shock for the petrographic entities in the increasing order of: (1) fusain, (2) clarain, (3) vitrain, and (4) durain.
