Anthracite lithology and electrokinetic behavior

Journal Article · · Adv. Chem. Ser.; (United States)
Chemical, physical, and electrokinetic properties of selected Pennsylvania anthracite were determined to characterize and differentiate anthracite lithotypes. Elemental and mineralogical analyses of whole coals and lithotypes were included in the study. Vitrain, fusain, and durain were distinguished megascopically. Emission spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence, and electronmicroprobe x-ray analysis were used for determination of elemental and mineralogical composition. A large percentage of Pennsylvania anthracite ash was composed of compounds of Fe, Si, and Al. Vitrain particles were high in Ca concentration. Quartz was evident in fusain, and a silicon and aluminum compound, probably kaolinitic in nature, was concentrated in the durain.
