A study of solvent extraction in the injection molding process
GE Neutron Devices (GEND) is investigating the injection molding process for the fabrication of ceramic components. One problem which has been encountered in the use of injection molding is related to the burn-off of organic binders used in the molding process. Burn-off involves very slow rates and very high temperatures. As a result, firing cycles often take several days. Solvent extraction was evaluated as a solution to the problem of binder burn-off. Removal of one or more of the organic materials by solvent extraction prior to heating could effectively alleviate the problem of binder burn-off by reducing the amount of organic to be removed and could provide actual paths for venting of volatilized material. The use of solvent extraction in the injection molding process has shown good promise in reducing the burn-off rate of organic materials. As a result, it is possible to utilize the standard GEND firing cycle for this process.
