Advances in the manufacturing of ceramic components for high-temperature applications are briefly reviewed. The cost and performance advantages of ceramics over superalloys are outlined; the problems encountered in casting and machining complex ceramic parts are described; and particular attention is given to injection molding of ceramic suspensions containing 10-20 wt pct plastic binder, which is burned out during firing. It is reported that injection-molded SiC and Si3N4 turbine rotors have operated at over 100,000 rpm with strengths of 60,000 and 110,000 psi, respectively.
