In 1989, 14 oil companies and 3 US automakers joined forces to undertake the Auto/Oil Air Quality Improvement Research Program (AQIRP). The objective was to develop data on fuel/vehicle system options that will help meet the nation's clean-air goals. Phase I of this comprehensive project has been completed, providing data on the impact of changes in gasoline composition and properties on exhaust and evaporative omissions and their effect on air quality. The study confirms that changes in the composition of gasoline can significantly reduce the contribution of cars and light-duty trucks to: mass emissions of regulated pollutants - hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NO[sub x]); airborne toxics; reactivity of emissions; and ozone formation.
