Twenty-seven horizontal wells had been drilled to date in Argentina at the time this article was written. All but three of them were drilled from existing vertical wells. The last one, Nq. LLL-198h, was the first horizontal hole drilled by state oil company YPF. Reservoirs drilled were of varying nature, but most of them consisted of tight sandstones, while a few involved calcareous material, quartzites and rocks of volcanic origin. Such is the case of YPF Fr. Pl, 21 h, which is described in this article. It was the first horizontal well drilled in Argentina through host rocks whose original physical characteristics have been modified by later processes, thereby resulting in atypical reservoirs.
