On the basis of experience and the results of horizontal drilling in the U.S. and Europe, both in abandoned fields to be developed and at the last development stage, YPF decided to start a pilot project involving four horizontal wells from existing vertical ones. Within this group, the ChSN 51 PoHor well became the first horizontal drilling operation carried out in Argentina. One objective was to gain knowledge on the following subjects: drilling technology and completion fluids; logging and log interpretation; completion technology (casing operation, stimulation, future workover prediction, etc.); horizontal well production and practical results of performance; reservoir exploratory capacity optimization (cores, cutting, etc.); primary economic results of application at the four horizontal wells; and probable advantages of applying horizontal drilling to EOR processes. This article discusses the ChNS 51 PoHor well with regard to overall consideration of the stated objective.
