This paper examines injury to plants and animals located in the areas around smelters. The body of the paper contains several actual case studies of smelters and their surrounding plant and animal populations. Plant injury is primarily due to sulfur dioxide or other sulfur compounds. Animals are affected by arsenic deposited on their forage. The smelters discussed were located in California, Montana and Tennessee.
