Vanadium oxides are well known to have high capacities for Li insertion from nonaqueous electrolytes such as those used in secondary Li batteries. Up to 3 moles of Li are inserted per mole of V[sub 2]O[sub 5][center dot]0.5 H[sub 2]O xerogel (XRG), as shown by concurrent charge and mass measurements with a quartz crystal microbalance. Further, it is demonstrated that only Li[sup +] ions are intercalated from the electrolyte, without cointercalation by other species in LiClO[sub 4] solutions in propylene carbonate.
