The sol-gel method provides a convenient means for preparing lead cuprates of the types Pb{sub 2}Sr{sub 2{minus}y}Ba{sub y}Ln{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8} (2213 type) with Ln = Y or rare earth and Pb{sub 1{minus}z}Cu{sub z}Sr{sub 2{minus}y}Ba{sub y}Y{sub 1{minus}x}Ca{sub x}Cu{sub 2}O{sub 7} (1212 type). Superconducting compositions of these two families showing sharp transitions can be prepared in a reproducible manner by this method.
