In order to meet air pollution control regulations, Detroit Edison elected to change the fuel burned at its St. Clair Power Plant to low-sulfur Western coal (the coal selected was from the Decker mine at Decker, Montana). This paper deals with the Company's operating experiences with this subbituminous coal. The discussion will encompass coal logistics and handling, capability effects, operating problems, and the impact on the community.
